Bloggers are a breed apart. They are an opinionated bunch, expressive too. With an abundance of attitude they are generally not prone to bowing to reality.
The reality here is that it is the mailing list of an Internet Business that generates most of it’s revenue rather than other sources of income such as selling advertising space on the blog.
Which has been the principal revenue stream in blogging.
Over the last year however, subscription boxes have become more common on blogs showing that bloggers are increasingly interested in building an email list.
After all advertisers are a fickle bunch. They will spend their advertising budget depending on their own financial situation. And in a time of recession advertisers typically cut back. This is counter productive of course and the smartest advertisers will spend more in these troubled times.
Putting oneself in the position of the blogger we can see that the need for some financial security is responsible for the increasing recognition of the importance of a mailing list.
Bloggers are learning a lesson from Internet Marketers.
After all the oft quoted Industry figure is that a list owner will expect to earn $1 per month per member of the list. A small list by the standards of Internet Marketing is 1000.
That gives a ballpark figure of $1000 per month for a very small list.
It is very easy to get carried away with number games here. Let’s focus on quality rather than quantity. What Internet marketers are typically poor at is cultivating a good relationship with their list members.
And ultimately it is the relationship between the list owner and their members that controls the earning potential of a list.
And here the blogger comes into his or her own.
Because typically the blogger is very aware of their readers. After all their readers typically comment in the blog and carry on a conversation with the blogger.
Cultivating that relationship is something bloggers can teach the Internet marketer.
A lot!
